The monarchy that followed West Francia, usually dated from Hugh Capet's election in 987. Capetian, Valois and Bourbon kings fought the Hundred Years' War, moved the court to Versailles in 1682, and lost the throne when the Convention proclaimed a republic on 21 September 1792.
