The Christian kingdom Stephen I founded in 1000 on the middle Danube, ruled by the Árpád dynasty and later by Angevin and elected kings. It survived the Mongol invasion of 1241 and peaked under Matthias Corvinus. This entry ends at Mohács in 1526, when the Ottomans destroyed its army and its king drowned while fleeing.

Encyclopedia.com's Ottoman entry says over 10,000 Hungarian foot soldiers were killed, along with most of the nobility and bishops. Two kings were then elected, John Zápolya and Ferdinand of Austria, and Hungary split into Ottoman, Habsburg and Zápolya zones.
