After defeating the Taira, Minamoto no Yoritomo set up a military government at Kamakura while the emperor stayed in Kyoto. Hōjō regents ran it after Yoritomo's death in 1199. It faced two Mongol invasions, in 1274 and 1281, and fell in 1333 when rebels took Kamakura.
