What happened
After the Company seized the French port of Mahé, which Hyder Ali had placed under his protection, Hyder crossed into the Carnatic in July 1780 with a large army. In September he and his son Tipu Sultan destroyed Colonel William Baillie's column at Pollilur, and late in 1780 they took Arcot. Sir Eyre Coote, sent from Bengal, defeated Hyder at Porto Novo and Sholinghur in 1781 but could not drive him out of the Carnatic. France, at war with Britain, sent troops and a fleet under the Bailli de Suffren to support Mysore. Hyder died in December 1782 and Tipu carried on the war, besieging the Company garrison of Mangalore from May 1783 until it surrendered in January 1784. When Britain and France made peace in 1783, French support ended, and the Treaty of Mangalore of March 1784 restored the territory each side had held before the war.
Outcome: The Treaty of Mangalore (11 March 1784) restored the territory each side had held before the war.
