What happened

In 1767 Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, and the Nizam of Hyderabad joined forces against the East India Company and its ally, the Nawab of the Carnatic. Colonel Joseph Smith's Company army beat their combined army at Tiruvannamalai in September 1767, and Hyder besieged Ambur without success. In 1768 the Nizam made peace with the Company, a Bombay expedition took Mysore's port of Mangalore for a few months, and Maratha horsemen under Murari Rao joined the Company near Bangalore. Hyder retook the coast, beat Company detachments in the Carnatic, and early in 1769 rode with about 6,000 cavalry to the outskirts of Madras. With the city nearly undefended, the Company signed the Treaty of Madras, under which each side promised to help the other if attacked.

Outcome: The Treaty of Madras (1769) ended the war; the Company and Mysore each promised to help the other if attacked.
