What happened

In October 1802 Yashwantrao Holkar of Indore defeated the armies of the Peshwa Baji Rao II and Daulat Rao Scindia near Poona. Baji Rao fled to the East India Company and in December signed the Treaty of Bassein, accepting a Company force paid for with his territory. Scindia of Gwalior and Raghuji II Bhonsle of Nagpur rejected the treaty, and in August 1803 Governor-General Richard Wellesley sent armies against them. In the Deccan, Arthur Wellesley took Ahmednagar and beat their combined army at Assaye in September and at Argaon in November; in the north, Gerard Lake beat Scindia's forces near Delhi in September and at Laswari in November. Both chiefs signed treaties in December 1803 giving up large territories, including the country around Delhi and Agra. War with Holkar followed in 1804; Lake failed to take Bharatpur, whose raja had joined Holkar, in four assaults in 1805, and the Treaty of Rajghat of December 1805 ended the fighting.

Outcome: Scindia and Bhonsle gave up large territories, including the Delhi–Agra region, by treaties of December 1803; the Treaty of Rajghat with Holkar ended the fighting in December 1805.
