What happened

Resentment of the British Resident's control of the Lahore court grew after the First Anglo-Sikh War. In April 1848 two British officers sent to take over Multan from its governor, Diwan Mulraj, were killed, and Mulraj's troops rose in revolt. Lieutenant Herbert Edwardes, with Pashtun irregulars and troops of the Nawab of Bahawalpur, beat Mulraj's forces in the field and drove them into Multan. In September Sher Singh Attariwalla, sent with Sikh troops to help the besiegers, joined the revolt, and his father Chattar Singh rose in Hazara; Afghan horsemen sent by Dost Mohammad Khan later joined them. Sir Hugh Gough's army fought Sher Singh at Ramnagar in November and at Chillianwala on 13 January 1849, where both sides lost heavily. Multan fell on 22 January after a siege, and on 21 February Gough's reinforced army defeated the Sikh army at Gujrat. The Sikh leaders surrendered near Rawalpindi in March, and on 29 March 1849 the Governor-General, Lord Dalhousie, annexed the Punjab and deposed the boy Maharaja Duleep Singh.

Outcome: The Sikh army surrendered in March 1849, and on 29 March the East India Company annexed the Punjab and deposed Maharaja Duleep Singh.
